About The Content Storyteller

‘So, where did the storytelling start?’ is a question that comes up regularly.

You can find a brief rundown below before I move on to my creative journey.

In 2018 I received my first commission, a blog for a business services business, for a tiny sum of money, but that didn’t matter because, for the first time in the business sector, I had made money from my words and ideas.

I’d finished up with the theatre obsession and was moving into screenwriting when a friend I worked with insisted I meet her boss, who was looking for a blog writer.

I’d never written a blog before, but I had just had a play produced on a London stage, so I was feeling ever-ready.

The fee was pitiful, but it didn’t matter; I had just made a commission using nothing but my ideas and words. So maybe there was something to using creativity in business.

There was, and is.

Since then, I’ve been working with clients to help them shine a light on their business using digital content such as landing pages or websites, animated scripts, ebooks even a 9-module e-learning course.

Creativity doesn’t just live on the stage, in a book, or in the arts industry; it is an essential part of how businesses communicate with the world.

Sarah takes a small spark of an idea and expands it into something engaging, relevant to our audience and most importantly, purposeful with a deep and meaningful message.

About Me

I arrived in this hemisphere in 1997 – I’d like to say I graced it with my presence, but being a wayward teenager, it was probably more a case of disgrace. So now, after over 20 years in London, I’ve arrived at my next stop, Aberdeen.

What a city this is! Two rivers, a beach, a ‘Bon Accord’ motto and friendly and engaged people. I’ve had more conversations with neighbours in 6 months than in London for ten years.

2008

In 2008 I had a Billy Elliot moment seeing a play in London. That was an adaptation of the Danish story Festen, and it was wild! I always knew I wanted to be a writer but hadn’t had any formal training. So when I saw that show, I knew I wanted to write for theatre.

2013

So I took on a Faber Academy course in 2013 titled ‘Write A Play In 3 Months’ and was one of three in a class of 20 that did. It was an awful play but the beginning of a satisfying period where I learned I loved writing. I worked a full-time job and was studying for a degree part-time, but all of that was just filler to the twilight writing hours.

With a sold-out, week-long run of my play, Sublime, on a London stage, the love affair with the form ended, and I moved on to screenwriting. Alongside the creative writing, I worked in project coordination roles in subsea engineering and construction. This gave me experience in large-scale projects and helped me fill all the seats in my London play run. I love multi-stream activities.

2018

In 2018 I set my sights on screenwriting which has given me a good skills base for business scripts. I scooped some awards for my stories and met some hugely inspirational people on the indie filmmaking set.

But at heart, I’m more of a storyteller than a networker, and the film business requires a lot of networking. So now, following a course at NESCOL, I’m working on short stories and planning a self-published collection in the future.

Of course, writing means I love literature and culture, which I discovered during my part-time Open University degree that I finished in 2014. They kicked me off in the end because I was capitalising on the decision to offer current students old pre-university fees. I squeezed in two extra modules before they sent me on my way with a 2:1 – fair enough!
